The Fourth Ward is one of the six historic wards in Houston, Texas. It was the site of Freeman’s Town, and now has a museum by the same name. Aside from the museum, there are a lot of ways for residents to connect to the neighborhood’s history, like visiting The African American Library at the Gregory School. Send your elementary-aged children to Gregory-Lincoln Education Center, and your high schoolers to Carnegie Vanguard High School.
There’s no shortage of outdoor activities with the four major public green spaces in and around the neighborhood. Pop down to the Buffalo Bayou for Jazzy Sundays or kite flying, have a family picnic in Tinsley Park, or sharpen up your skateboarding skills at Jamail Skatepark.

If you’re looking for a diverse, eclectic vibe to raise your family around, look no further than Montrose. The neighborhood is known for being LGBTQ+ friendly, its vintage stories, and unique restaurants. It’s a very art-focused neighborhood with a ton of galleries, and the Rothko Chapel that houses tons of abstract murals. Like the residents of the Fourth Ward, Eleanor Tinsley Park is a popular place among families in Montrose. The neighborhood’s main event is the Houston Greek Festival, which happens in October.
There are education options from kindergarten to university available in the neighborhood. For your youngest children, consider Poe Elementary School or Baker Montessori School. For your high schoolers, Lamar High School is the top choice. For university, the University of St. Thomas is right in town.

In Meyerland, the options of things to do as a family are simple, yet have quite a bit of history to them. A lot of the parks have been around for quite some time, changed names, and the community centers have also been taken on by different groups. If you want to get your kids into Little League baseball, Meyerland Park is the place to do that. The most popular green space in town is Herbert Godwin Park and its adjacent Godwin Park Recreational Center. The area features a beautiful outdoor pavilion, a playground, and a well-lit sports park.
For your teens that only want to hang out with folks their age, the Merfish Teen Center is available. From Monday to Friday, drop your children off at Herod Elementary School or Bellaire High School.

Greater Heights, also known as Houston Heights or The Heights, is a residential area full of early 20th-century homes and quirky, independent establishments. You and your family can spend hours on a Saturday popping into record shops, checking out the latest vintage fashion finds at a local vendor, or finding original gifts for friends and family not in town. One place that the neighborhood is known for is 14 Pews, a tiny church turned indie movie house.
For outdoor entertainment, take the little ones to Donovan Park, which is complete with a wooden-castle-themed playground. There are many schools in the neighborhood to choose from, including Field Elementary School and Heights High School.

River Oaks is a more upscale neighborhood in Houston. The bustling River Oaks Shopping Center is known for its high-end shopping and global restaurant offerings. Fun for the whole family can be found at River Oaks Park or the River Oaks Community Center, which has tennis courts, playgrounds, and a lit-up sports area. During the week, have your children attend River Oaks Elementary School or Lamar High School.
