We’ve expanded our coverage and recalculated our Cycling scores!
Our recent update to Cycling Scores represents a leap forward in accuracy — with coverage being near 100%. Previously limited to core urban centers in Canada, our Cycling Scores now span the entire US and Canada with updated cycling infrastructure data. The expansion was not just about widening the reach but also about refining the methodology for better precision.
🚲 Key updates include:
- Vast Coverage Increase: Our Cycling Scores have 99.99% street-segment coverage in the US and 100% in Canada, offering more granularity.
- Data Sources Augmentation: We’ve integrated diverse datasets, including cycling infrastructure (bike lanes and paths) from Open Street Maps, bike-share data (both docked and dockless), the latest cycling-commuter data from Canadian census and US American Community Survey, and elevation data from government sources.
- Algorithm Refinements: Our algorithm underwent meticulous adjustments to enhance accuracy. Notable improvements include a more nuanced consideration of cycling infrastructure quality, revised treatment of highways, and a balanced weighting of variables (e.g. bike-sharing and cycling commuters) for fair assessment.
Below is an example of the coverage update for the NYC metro area. In addition to updating existing scores, the availability of scores in suburbs and on the periphery of the metro area has improved over the years:
