School ratings in Canada

For many home consumers, schools are part of the decision from the very first search. Local Logic’s School Data already covers school locations, types, programs, and boundaries across Canada and the United States. Now Canadian schools carry a rating too.

School ratings are now available for schools in Ontario and British Columbia, joining the ratings already offered for US schools. The grade gives home consumers a clear, sourced reference point for the schools near a property, right alongside the rest of the school details.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Letter-grade school ratings for Ontario and British Columbia, joining existing US coverage
  • Sourced from provincial standardized test results, normalized for each school’s context
  • Opt-in with a single initialization parameter, live in the Schools API, Local Content, Neighborhood Map, and Neighborhood Schools

What the update adds

Canadian schools in Ontario and British Columbia now include a letter-grade rating in the Schools API. The rating sits next to the school’s existing details, so a single call returns the school’s name, type, programs, and now its grade.

This brings Canadian coverage in line with what the API already provides for US schools, giving teams that operate on both sides of the border a more consistent set of school details to build with.

How the ratings are calculated

The ratings are based largely on provincial standardized test results, normalized for the socioeconomic makeup of each school’s student population. That normalization matters: it measures how a school performs relative to its context, rather than simply reflecting the area around it.

The result is an objective, comparable grade drawn from public data, not a subjective judgment. Coverage currently includes Ontario and British Columbia, and not every school in those provinces will carry a rating.

How to turn it on

School ratings are an opt-in feature. To include them, pass a single initialization parameter in your implementation, and the ratings will appear in the school details returned to your application. The exact parameter and response fields are documented in the Schools API documentation, which has been updated with this release.

Where the ratings are available

The new Canadian ratings are available through the Schools API and are already live in Local Content, Neighborhood Map, and Neighborhood Schools.

Any listing and neighborhood experiences that surface school details can include them once the feature is enabled.

The bigger picture

Schools are one of the clearest examples of how much life outside the four walls shapes a home decision. Giving home consumers a sourced, comparable view of the schools nearby is one more way to help them understand what living somewhere would really be like.
